A little bit about me...

Hi, I'm Clair. Thank you for visiting my website. I am a self-taught artist based in Surrey, UK, working mainly with graphite and coloured pencils and am a member of the UK Colour Pencil Society.

I particularly love drawing people as I have a passion for portraiture, but as a great animal lover, I also thoroughly enjoy drawing them as I like to capture the individual personalities of beloved family pets.

I am also a member of the Association of Animal Artists.

If you would like to commission me, please check out my Commissions section, which will provide you with a comprehensive price list and also guidelines help with your photo submissions. This will ensure that the final portrait is as clear and as detailed as possible.

In order to raise some much needed funds for my favourite charities, 10% of each commission payment will be sent directly to Haven's Hospices in Essex (human portraits), One Love Rescue, Crete (pet portraits) and for any other subject, Parkinson's UK.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.

Below are  a few of my favourites that I drew for my own pleasure:

This is Highlander, just a piece to keep me busy. Faber-Castell Polychromos on A3 Strathmore Artist Papers Bristol Smooth. Drawn from a photo from Pixabay.A packet of Irish crispsMy lovely doggie, Dennis! My brother's childhood teddy bear. This is featured in the 'CP Hidden Treasures 8' magazineA beard you could lose a badger in!My niece, Jessica. Another talented artistMy daughter ÁineMy daughter Olivia
The following are commissions that I remembered to photograph before sending them to their new owners:

This is beautiful Mythos, who found his lovely owner in Crete when he was a pup. He was such fun to draw but I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t be able to capture his spirit and beauty enough as I took various parts from different photos. That smile had to be in it of course, but also the one ear up, one ear down which was very ‘him’. I have heard from his owner that he was a little character and hopefully you can see that from my drawing. This gorgeous girl is ‘Bonnie’ who has now very sadly passed, but she has the look of a dog who knows she was loved very, very much. This is Rolo, who sadly passed recently. This is LunaStella
Achievements

My latest artwork will be exhibited and for sale in the Epsom and Ewell Art Group Spring 2024 Exhibition at The Horton, Epsom, Surrey. Please come along and show your support for local artists.

I am featured in the latest edition of Leisure Painter

I have recently become a member of the Association of Animal Artists.

My artwork has been published in the 2023 US publication 'CP Hidden Treasures 8' which is available for digital download from Ann Kullberg's website or in print from Amazon. It is a huge accolade to be included in one of these annual publications as the entries come from artists worldwide, so I was extremely honoured to have my artwork chosen.

Two of my drawings were longlisted in the Visual Art Open 2023 UK & International Emerging Artist Awards.

One of my drawings was accepted into the UK Colour Pencil Society's Annual Open Exhibition 2023. I am a member of the UKCPS and since I joined in 2020, I have been amazed at the standard of artwork produced by its members.  To be included in their 2023 Open Exhibition is a huge achievement for me.
Commissions

If you would like me to draw a picture for you, please get in touch. I love drawing and new challenges and of course, donating to my favourite charities. For the best result, please read my guidelines below:

Reference Photos:

This is the most important part of the commission.  The better the photo, the better the finished portrait will be.  You do not need an expensive SLR digital camera to achieve a good result, most smartphones are more than adequate. Here are a few guidelines to remember:

  • Try to submit more than one photo.  You may have a specific photo in mind for me to reproduce however, by submitting other photos of the same subject, I can be sure to capture the subject's character.
  • Natural light is best, avoiding shadows. This will help me to achieve the correct colours when producing your drawing.
  • It is much more appealing when a photo is taken from the same level as the subject.
  • They should be close enough so that I can make out details such as eyes, whiskers etc. as this makes for a more detailed drawing.
  • I know how difficult it is to get multiple subjects to pose in one photograph. I am more than happy to work from multiple photographs to get the desired outcome.

I understand that sometimes the subject of your photo may sadly have passed.  If this is the case, please provide as many photographs as possible.

Artwork Pricing:

  • A5 (single subject only), £90
  • A4 (single subject only), £140
  • A3 (single subject only), £280
  • A3 (multiple subjects), £280 for the first subject then 30% extra for each additional subject

Larger sizes can be undertaken upon request.

A non-refundable deposit of 30% of the price of the artwork is required to secure the booking, at which point I will advise you of the intended start date and an estimated time frame for completion. The remaining amount (plus the postage and packing and any framing costs if requested) is to be paid after the final image has been reviewed by the client but prior to the artwork being posted.  If, due to unforeseen circumstances, I am unable to commence or complete your commission in the time frame provided, your deposit will be refunded in full.

Your completed artwork will be sent to you securely flat packed in an acid-free clear biodegradable sleeve, for you to mount and frame to meet your own requirements.  Although I use the highest quality materials, I would suggest that you use acid-free mounts and UV protective glass when framing.

If you would like the artwork to be mounted and framed by me, I will be happy to provide a quote from my local framer, Casson's Framing.

Your artwork will be posted using Royal Mail and tracked with insurance to cover loss in transit and damage. Once it has been posted, I will provide you with the tracking number by email.

To make payment, PayPal is best where possible using clairhuntillustration@gmail.com. Alternatively, bank details can be provided upon request.

Testimonials

Below are a few comments from some of my customers:

‘Clair drew the most striking lifelike picture of my sister's cat Honey. It was so well received, after the tears it went straight on the wall! Thank you so much.’
Jo, Surrey

'I would highly recommend commissioning Clair! My husband was very tearful on Christmas Day when I gave him a portrait of his best friend Dexter! The accuracy of Clair's artistry is incredible. Thank you Clair for the wonderful work you do!'
Julie, Glasgow

' I would certainly recommend Clair to do a painting. She is a very talented artist. She did a brilliant portrait of my dog Rea. The detail is amazing. It’s just perfect.'
Carol Ann, Yeadon

‘ I commissioned Clair to do a portrait of my daughter's favorite high school graduation photograph so we could give it to her as a graduation present. Clair was meticulous to a fault, checking in with me on almost a daily basis, to be sure she was capturing what I wanted. She was very open to suggestions, and made subtle changes based on my feedback. The result is a wonderful keepsake that will forever remind us of that wonderful time. To be as talented an artist as Clair is one thing, but to be so amazingly easy to work with (and ridiculously reasonably priced to boot) is another thing altogether. Clair is marvellous and I will definitely commission her again!’
Brid, Arizona, USA

Clair is an incredibly talented artist. She created an amazing drawing of our puppy for my husband’s birthday and I was absolutely delighted with it. I imagine it was not the easiest to sketch as we have a very fluffy dog but Clair captured her character and cuteness really well. It is now framed and has pride of place in our dining room, providing us with memories forever. I would highly recommend Clair!
